Pope Francis condemned the "folly of war," as he led Palm Sunday services in St. Peter's Square, saying in a reference to Ukraine that those who cause mothers to mourn and soldiers to kill know nothing of God.

Tens of thousands of people holding palm and olive branches attended the service, marking the first time since 2019 that the public was allowed into the square following two years of scaled-back services because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Palm Sunday commemorates the day the Gospel say Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and was hailed by the people, only to be crucified five days later.

Francis evoked the horrors of the war in Ukraine in his homily, while not mentioning the country specifically.

"When we resort to violence, we show that we no longer know anything about God, who is our Father, or even about others, who are our brothers and sisters," he said.

Palm Sunday marks the start of Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday.
