Pope Francis said Sunday, during a press conference on board the plane returning from a two-country trip to Africa, that laws criminalizing LGBTQ2+ people are a “sin” and an injustice.

“This is not right. Persons with homosexual tendencies are children of God. God loves them,” he said. “Condemning a person like this is a sin. Criminalizing people with homosexual tendencies is an injustice.”

Francis cited unnamed statistics that 50 countries criminalize LGBTQ2+ people “in one way or another” and about 10 others have laws that include the death penalty.

Sixty-six UN member states continue to criminalize consensual same-sex relations, according to data from ILGA World, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.
