Pope Francis spoke about the meaning to reconciliation on Monday during his visit to Edmonton, Alta., saying he could not imagine the effort it takes those who suffered "so greatly" because of men and women who "should have set an example of Christian living."

He appeared to criticize some who follow Christianity, saying "one cannot proclaim God in a way contrary to God himself," and said those who supported residential schools were "more about their own prejudice than Christianity."

The Pope also spoke about visiting the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, saying he had "come to visit your home, as a friend and a pilgrim in your land, in this church where you gather to praise God as brothers and sisters."

He also visited with Indigenous Peoples and parish members during his visit, where he was presented with different items and spoke to those who came up to him.
