Tonight’s top story: Pope Francis has left Canada after a historic tour in which he made several apologies to Indigenous residential school survivors. However, for many who wanted an explicit apology for institutional harms committed by the Catholic Church, the pope’s apology falls short. Mike Armstrong has more reaction from those who gathered to hear the pontiff’s message.

The Canadian government confirms it has asked France to extradite a priest accused of crimes against children in Nunavut. Johannes Rivoire is accused of sexually abusing residential school students in the 1960s and 1970s. As Jeff Semple reports, residential school survivors have asked the Pope to intervene in the case.

Also, the Canadian government is accused of failing to deliver on its pledge to end violence against Indigenous women and girls. One advocate took those concerns to Edmonton in an attempt to capture the Pope’s attention. Neetu Garcha reports.

A damning report criticizes Canada Soccer for mishandling sexual misconduct complaints against a women’s soccer coach. It follows similar allegations against Hockey Canada, which prompted the sports minister to freeze funding to the organization. Abigail Bimman reports on growing calls for accountability.

While Russia’s invasion of Ukraine drags on, the Kremlin is also making moves in space. Moscow wants to leave the International Space Station and build its own orbiting platform. As Redmond Shannon reports, the move spells the end to a decades-long partnership between Russia and the West.

As the Pope’s visit to Canada comes to a close, residential school survivors and their families are reflecting on a historic week and the path forward. Jeff Semple looks back at the papal tour and its impact.
