On this episode of Global National: Pope Francis has touched down in Edmonton – the first stop of his Canadian visit to make amends with Indigenous people and apologize for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools. Sarah Ryan tells us about his first appearance ahead of his six-day visit, where he will also go to Quebec City and meet with the Iqaluit people.

Plus, our own Heather Yourex-West spoke with a residential school survivor, who said the Pope’s visit will not be a healing experience for him.

In the U.S., a series of votes have been held in the House aimed at shoring up protections for Americans, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In the past week, bills to protect same-sex marriage and guarantee access to contraception were passed – with bipartisan support. As Reggie Cecchini tells us, the votes could get support from the Senate.

And the heatwave continues across the U.S., with record-breaking temperatures from coast-to-coast, wildfires are burning throughout the West. Jennifer Johnson has the story.
