Pope Francis decried what he called an “Easter of War” during his address to the faithful from St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, calling for an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It was the first Easter since 2019 that the public was allowed to attend the Pope’s address following two years of COVID-19 restrictions.

“We have seen all too much blood, all too much violence. Our hearts, too, have been filled with fear and anguish, as so many of our brothers and sisters have had to lock themselves away in order to be safe from bombing,” he said.

This is not the first time Pope Francis has criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine, saying earlier in April that he was creating conflict for national interests.
