It has been been two years since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many in Washington feared Kyiv would fall in four days. While Ukraine still stands, it bears the burden of Russia's war. Hundreds of thousands of people have died, with no clear end to the war in sight.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed frustration and worry that military assistance promised by Western allies will be delayed, and new concerns emerged after the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. Western leaders blamed Putin, and the U.S. announced new sanctions against Russia, both in response to the ongoing war and to Navalny's death.
