A man with a knife who attacked and injured six people at Paris' Gare du Nord train station on Wednesday is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot several times by police, according to officials.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the officers who shot the suspect were off-duty, but were allowed to carry their weapons. They shot three times and were able to neutralize the suspect.

The man's motives were not immediately clear, police said. The Paris prosecutor said in a statement a criminal investigation had been opened.
