Panama's government has announced measures to curb the rise in fuel prices and some essential food products.
It follows a week of nationwide protests which are showing no signs of dying down.
President Laurentino Cortizo blamed the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine for the cost hikes.
He promised to reduce the price of petrol by 24 percent and freeze the cost of 10 basic food items to try and dissuade protesters.
Al Jazeera’s Alessandro Rampietti reports.
