Palestinian and Jewish parental groups came together on Wednesday to call on the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to address anti-Palestinian racism.

Nadine Nasir, a mother of a Palestinian student, said “biased” communications distributed by the school board have created a “chilling” effect on those who might speak out for Palestinian human rights.

“Our children are bewildered by the world’s silence and indifference in the face of these horrors,” she said.

Nasir was joined by Ben Lassman of Toronto Jewish Families, who said his group had reached out to the school board about its statement in response to the Hamas attack on Israel and Israel’s subsequent bombardment of Gaza and was told by a school trustee that “we do not represent Toronto Jewish families.”

The groups are calling on the Toronto school board to take steps to address anti-Palestinian racism, including changes to its equity policy and including Palestinian voices in its educational resources.
