The Prince and Princess of Wales have been in Boston to promote their environmental Earthshot Prize, but their US visit has been overshadowed by a row over racism back in the UK.
The prince's godmother, Lady Susan Hussey, resigned from her royal role after repeatedly asking a black British charity boss where she was "really" from.
Ngozi Fulani, who was questioned about her background, said the encounter was "like an interrogation" and "abuse".
The palace described the remarks as "unacceptable and deeply regrettable", while a spokesperson for Prince William said "racism has no place in our society".
