Ambulances transporting injured people continued to arrive at a hospital in Pakistan's Peshawar on Tuesday, a day after a suicide bombing ripped through a crowded mosque in a heavily fortified area of the city, killing at least 88 people, mostly policemen.

At least 170 people were wounded in the blast, which demolished the upper story of the mosque, the main place of worship in a district housing several police offices, as hundreds of worshippers performed noon prayers.

A rescue worker said worshippers buried under the rubble of a collapsed section of the mosque were still being pulled out, 12 hours after they started operations, and they were hoping to conclude evacuation efforts soon.

Authorities say they do not know how the bomber managed to enter the area, which is protected by a series of checkpoints manned by police and military personnel. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the bomber was standing in the first row in the prayer hall when he detonated his explosives.
