Officials in East Palestine, Ohio, including from United States Environmental Protection Agency, delivered a press conference on Sunday regarding the train derailment that lead to a massive chemical spill, stating cleanup efforts are continuing and will resume on Monday.
Officials also said they'll be providing the public with daily updates around 4 p.m. ET as the situation evolves.
Last Thursday, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Jennifer Homendy said during a preliminary report that "we know what derailed the train — we have a lot of questions."
As part of that preliminary report, Homendy said the failure of roller bearings were identified as playing a role in the derailment. "Roller bearings fail. But it's absolutely critical for problems to be identified and addressed early, so these aren't run until failure."
Homendy says the NTSB is currently in the "fact-finding phase" of their investigation and announced that they will be holding a "rare investigative field hearing this spring in East Palestine." She says the hearing will help inform the public, collect factual information from witnesses, discuss possible solutions and build consciousness for change.
