The chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Jennifer Homendy said Thursday during a preliminary report on the investigation into the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio that "we know what derailed the train -- we have a lot of questions."
As part of the report, Homendy said the failure of roller bearings were identified as playing a role in the derailment. "Roller bearings fail. But it's absolutely critical for problems to be identified and addressed early, so these aren't run until failure."
Quoting a report from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada in 2013, Homendy said "it is recognized in the railway industry that wheelset roller bearings can fail catastrophically in as few as 10 to 15 miles on a train travelling at track speed. You cannot wait until they fail -- problems need to be identified early."
Homendy says the NTSB is currently in the "fact-finding phase" of their investigation and announced that they will be holding a "rare investigative field hearing this spring in East Palestine."
She says the hearing will help inform the public, collect factual information from witnesses, discuss possible solutions and build consciousness for change.
