Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the daily joint press briefing in East Palestine.

Amit Bose, Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, announced new nationwide focused inspections on railroad routes carrying high hazard flammable trains or large volumes of hazardous materials. He said there will be a combination of visual inspections and automated track inspection technology.

Meanwhile, EPA Regional Administrator for Region 5 Debra Shore said air monitoring remains normal, and there is no detectable danger. She also added that representatives from Norfolk Southern will be attending an East Palestine town hall Thursday evening at EPA’s request and order.

Finally, Governor Mike DeWine spoke about continuing to support the community, naming a number of online resources that individuals would be able to access for additional information. He also said they are seeking to improve training for local first responders for special railroad incidents in coordination with major railroad organizations.
