NTSB says data shows Amtrak train was travelling under speed limit before derailment in Montana

National Transportation Safety Board investigators say they are going through video from the Amtrak train that jumped its tracks and derailed on Saturday near Joplin, Montana. Vice-Chairman Bruce Landsberg said Monday that according to preliminary reports from the locomotive recorder, the train was travelling between 75 and 78 miles per hour when it derailed but the speed limit for that section of track for passenger trains was 79 miles per hour.

Landsberg also said investigators were examining the black box from the train, as well as camera footage from both the derailed train and BNSF Railway freight trains that used the track that day.

At least three people died in the incident, with several people injured with at least seven hospitalized. The train consisted of two locomotives and 10 cars with about 141 passengers and 16 crew on board, according to Amtrak.
