Novak Djokovic said on Wednesday that an incorrect answer was made on his Australian entry documents, breaching the country’s strict laws on reporting recent travel amid COVID-19, as the government said it was still considering whether to deport the tennis star.

Some Melbourne residents said they were unimpressed by a recent statement released by the Serbian tennis player, who attributed a mistake on his documents to "human error."

“I feel he's come across as he's above it all. But it does feel like we've stuffed up on our side. And so it's a bit of a mess,” said resident Teyhan Ismain.

Djokovic was held in immigration detention in Melbourne for several days after his visa was cancelled by border force officials, who questioned his medical exemption for a requirement to be vaccinated for COVID-19. He was later released when a judge ruled the cancellation of the visa was "unreasonable" because the player was not given time to consult with lawyers and tennis officials when he arrived in the country.
