Northern Hemisphere saw its hottest summer in 2,000 years last year — what does it mean?

European researchers have determined that the summer of 2023 was the hottest recorded in the last 2,000 years.

While temperature record-keeping goes back as far as 150 years, scientists used thousands of tree rings from nine different regions across the hemisphere and found last year was more than two degrees celsius higher than pre-industrial levels.

Researchers say the report shows how vital it is to limit greenhouse gas emissions to prevent further acceleration.
