Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said firefighters were still in an "attack mode" when it came to battling the fires in the central part of the province.

The premier said that rainy weather on Tuesday was cooperating with the efforts to help contain and stop the fires.

Furey said that they will keep their state of emergency in place in case the winds shift as there are still large plumes of smoke that could wreak havoc on nearby communities.

Two fires with area totaling over 160 square kilometres have shut down the only highway connecting the towns on Newfoundland’s southern Connaigre Peninsula with the rest of the province.

The fires have been burning for over two weeks and the remote Bay d’Espoir highway hasn’t opened up since last Thursday morning.

Helicopters have begun flying in essential supplies to the cut-off towns.
