New Caledonia is under a state of emergency after days of deadly riots, sparked over the announcement of controversial electoral reforms.

The French territory is a series of islands in the south Pacific ocean, about 1,300 kilometres east of Australia.

As Global’s Mike Armstrong explains, critics say the proposed changes will further marginalize Indigenous Kanak people, which make up nearly half of the territory's population.
