Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday to continue the country's military operation in Jenin for "as long as required to restore calm and security to the people of Israel." Speaking after a meeting with Israeli heads of security bodies in central Israel, Netanyahu justified the biggest West Bank operation in 20 years by saying that "in recent months, Jenin has become a haven for terrorism."

Israeli forces hit the city of Jenin with drone strikes on Monday, killing at least eight people and involving hundreds of troops in gun battles that continued into the afternoon.

There were gun battles throughout the day between Israeli troops and fighters from the Jenin Brigades, a unit made up of militant groups based in the city's crowded refugee camp.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday suspended contact and security coordination with Israel after Israeli forces launched the raid in Jenin.

"There will be a suspension of all the meetings and calls with Israeli side," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. "We will suspend the security coordination (with Israel)."
