There is considerable pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both internationally and domestically. Internationally, the US seeks a shift to less intense fighting, reiterated by multiple American officials.
Domestically, pressure has increased from captive families and the "Bring Them Back Now" movement, escalating after three Israeli captives were killed in Gaza by the Israeli military.
Egyptian officials suggest Israel is willing to pause fighting for a week in exchange for 40 captives, including women, children, and elderly men.
Over 100 captives remain in Gaza. Talks in Cairo include representation from Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
In Israeli society, there is cautious optimism for captive release, but no Israeli indication of willingness for a prisoner exchange yet.
