On Friday, rescuers in Nepal searched for at least 62 missing passengers after landslides swept two buses into a river. Meanwhile, landslides elsewhere in the mountainous country killed at least 10 people, police said.
A rescue team was seen paddling on a lifeboat against a fast-flowing river, searching for the missing passengers. At least three passengers survived with minor injures by jumping off the buses before the mass of rocks and mud came down the slopes, a district official said on Friday.
"All of a sudden, mud and debris started to come down. We jumped from the bus as it started veering off. I was at the front of the bus with five others but only three of us were able to survive. There were about 35 people on the bus," said Jugasar Raya Yadav, one of the landslide survivors.
In a social media post on Friday, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed sadness over the disasters and instructed government agencies to conduct effective search and rescue operations. According to officials, landslides and floods have killed at least 91 people in Nepal since mid-June.
