NATO Summit: Defence spending top of mind as Trudeau meets with US political leaders

As NATO leaders gather in Washington, D.C. for their annual summit, Canada’s involvement in major discussions may be complicated by how allies view its commitment to defence spending.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to meet with American political leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Tuesday, on the first day of the summit.

But pressure to meet NATO’s threshold of spending at least two per cent of GDP on defence — and present a concrete plan to get there — may come to a head at the summit.
