Footage of giant aircraft speeding through the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) at concerningly low altitudes left Torontonians in a panic over the weekend as to what was happening in the sky.

NASA officials, however, told Global News that the close encounters were approved as part of an air pollution monitoring program — the “AEROMMA project” — which is also being conducted in other major, urban North American cities, including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

AEROMMA stands for Atmospheric Emissions and Reactions Observed from Mega-cities to Marine Areas.

NASA says it wants to “sample where humans are.”
