Yangon residents banged on pots and pans for the third night in a row on Thursday, a symbolic move meant to show resistance against the military coup in Myanmar, also known as Burma.

As the clock struck 8 pm local, various neighbourhoods across the city echoed with the noises of people banging tins, pots and pans in protest to “drive out” the military, as well as cars sounding their horns.

In another show of defiance to the coup, National League for Democracy (NLD) lawmakers gathered to sign a parliamentarian pledge of oath at the Si Bin government residence in the capital Naypyitaw after the opening of the parliament session was blocked by military earlier in the week.

The army seized power on Monday alleging irregularities in the election, derailing Myanmar's long and troubled transition to democracy.

The move was condemned by the United Nations and many Western governments, which called on the military junta to respect Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy's landslide election victory.
