The striking of pans and honking of horns was heard for a second day around the city of Yangon in Myanmar, also known as Burma, on Wednesday, as a sign of public action to reject a military coup that ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi's government.
Car horns were sounded after dark as drivers rallied behind calls for civil disobedience campaigns. Medics also threatened to stop work, even as the coronavirus epidemic rages.
Suu Kyi had called on the public to reject the coup, according to her party, which won a November election in a landslide according to Myanmar election officials.
A few dozen Myanmar expatriates also gathered outside the United Nations building in Bangkok, Thailand, to protest against the military coup. Demonstrators held photos of Suu Kyi while chanting "we don't want the military!”
Myanmar's military seized power in a coup on Monday, detaining Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi and other civilian politicians in morning raids. The takeover cut short Myanmar's long transition to democracy and drew condemnation from the United States and other Western countries.
