More than 1,000 are people are dead and over 670 injured following an earthquake in Morocco Friday.

The magnitude 7.2 earthquake shook a 72-kilometre stretch of the African country for seconds in the evening and was followed by an aftershock minutes later.

It was the most powerful quake the nation has experienced since 2004, and the deadliest in more than six decades.
The devastation sent residents rushing to the streets for safety, leaving hundreds to sleep out in the open to avoid the danger of being inside.

The tremor struck in Morocco's High Atlas mountains. It also damaged historic building in Marrakech, the city nearest to the epicentre.
