More than 170 Palestinians and at least six Israeli police officers were injured Friday when clashes broke out between worshippers and authorities at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a major holy site sacred to Muslims and Jews, in what's being called an escalation of weeks of violence in Jerusalem.
According to Palestinian medics, at least 178 people were injured in the fighting that saw police fire rubber bullets and stun grenades. While it's not clear what sparked the violence, videos circulating online showed people throwing chairs, shoes and rocks at police.
Israelis and Palestinians are bracing for more violence in the coming days amid growing anger over the potential eviction of Palestinians from homes on land claimed by Jewish settlers.
