Police in California provided an update on Monday after mass shootings at Monterey Park in Torrance, Calif. killed 11 people and injured nine others after Lunar New Year celebrations. Authorities confirmed yesterday that the suspect in the shootings has died from a self-inflicted gunshot after police found a white van.
Hospital officials said in a statement Monday one of the injured "succumbed to their extensive injuries," raising the death toll to 11.
Police say the suspect is 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, and that several pieces of evidence linking Tran to the shootings in Monterey Park were found inside the white van. Authorities say a handgun was also found inside the van and there are no outstanding suspects in the mass shootings.
Though the suspect is dead, the motive is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing, law enforcement officials added in the update on Sunday. Chief Scott Wiese said that they may "never know why" Tran committed the crime, but he had yet to be briefed on what was found during the execution of search warrants. However, he cautioned it may only lead to a "fragmented why."
The tragedy marked the fifth mass killing in the U.S. since the start of the year. It is also the deadliest since May 24, 2022, when 21 people were killed in a school in Uvalde, Texas, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S.
