Residents of Milan woke up on Monday to heavy snowfall blanketing the northern Italian city.
Snow hit overnight and in the early hours of the morning, leaving a white layer covering the financial hub and bringing a Christmassy feel to the iconic Duomo Square by the cathedral.
At least seven inches of snow fell in Milan, causing widespread travel disruption, city officials said. City workers were out in the early hours in an effort to clear roads and entrances to subway stations, hospitals and public offices, while parks were closed after the snow caused tree branches to collapse, according to officials.
Cold temperatures have brought snow to much of northwestern Italy, including South Tyrol province. Up to 15 cm were expected in Milan.
