Merkel's CDU defeats far-right AfD in crucial German state election | DW News
Germany's far-right AfD appears to have failed in its attempt to send shockwaves across the political landscape in a regional election. Polls have just closed in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The far-right Alternative for Germany party hoped to win a surprise victory over Angela Merkel's conservatives in the final major test before September's general election. But exit polls put the Chancellor's party comfortably ahead in the regional vote.
The projected results based on exit polls taken throughout the day break down as follows:
Angela Merkel's conservative CDU - 36
Far-right AfD - 22.7
Socialist Left Party – 10.8
Center-left SPD - 8.3
Environmentalist Greens - 6.6
Business friendly FDP - 6.5
