German election: Parties negotiate coalition to determine Merkel's successor

The results are in from Germany's historic federal election, where the country's Social Democratic Party (SPD) has achieved razor-thin victory over Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The SPD, led by Olaf Scholz, eked out a win by 10 seats, as the CDU, now led by Armin Laschet, saw its worse election result in its history.

But as Redmond Shannon reports, given the tight outcome, the question of who's succeeding Merkel as chancellor still hangs in the air, as the two parties haggle for a coalition with others in order to form government.
