Maui wildfires: Brief reopening of Lahaina spurs scramble for access

Officials cancelled a plan to allow designated residents, volunteers and emergency personnel access to the devastated community of Lahaina before it could be enacted Monday after an influx of non-essential persons.

It was a week ago Tuesday that a fast-moving fire tore through Lahaina and the death toll continues to climb as crews continue the devastating work of sifting through the ruins of destroyed homes and landmarks.

Hawaiian Electric says power has now been restored to much of West Maui and volunteers hope that will make it easier to get supplies to those who need them.
