At least 36 people have died after wildfires in Hawaii, officials say, fanned by winds from a faraway hurricane, burned resort city Lahaina on Maui island "to a crisp."

Multiple neighbourhoods were torched to the ground as the west side of the island was nearly cut off, with only one highway open and thousands to evacuate as officials told of widespread devastation in Lahaina, which dates to the 1700s and has long been a favourite destination for tourists.

Crews battled blazes in several places on the island Wednesday, and the flames forced some adults and children to flee into the ocean.

"We've been pulling people out since last night. trying to save people's lives and I feel like we're not getting the help we need," Kekoa Lansford, a Lahaina resident said.
