Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, the former head of Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine campaign, who was found not guilty of sexual assault on Monday, says he was “so relieved” by the verdict.

Last year, Quebec prosecutors charged Fortin, who has maintained his innocence, with one count of sexual assault. Judge Richard Meredith delivered the verdict Monday afternoon in Gatineau, Que.

The complainant in the case, who was attending military college with Fortin in 1988 in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., testified at trial that she woke up one night in her dorm room to find a man masturbating himself using one of her hands, while another hand was on her breast.

“This is one important step in an ongoing process to prove my innocence and recover my reputation,” he said.

Fortin told reporters he was denied due process and claimed that, from the start, senior military and political leaders had “presumed and acted” as if he was guilty.
Crown Prosecutor Diane Legault said she was “not completely happy” with the verdict but said they would have to read the full decision before deciding whether to appeal.
