Local council elections go under the microscope | 1News

The way we pick our local councils is going under the microscope with a new review by Local Government New Zealand.

A key goal of the group will be to increase voter turnout as it's been steadily dropping over the past three decades with only 40% of us having a say in both council and mayoral elections.

Another key aim is to transition local government to four-year terms instead of the current three years to make the election process cheaper and more effective.
