Māori wards are designated seats on councils that are elected by and directly accountable to voters on the Māori electoral roll.

Auckland Council has voted against establishing any for the 2025 local body elections, a decision it won’t be able to revisit until 2028.

1News Māori Affairs Correspondent was in the council chamber as the decision was reached.
