New Zealand’s population has become more ethnically diverse, with Māori and Asian ethnic groups experiencing the largest increases in the past five years, according to the first release of data from the 2023 Census.

Overall, the number of people counted in the Census was 4,933,923 – an additional 300,000 people compared to the last count.

Stats NZ reported that population growth slowed considerably between censuses due to a declining birth rate and the borders only recently reopening at the time of the Census after Covid closures.

Due to the immense volume of comments 1News videos attract, we've made the decision to hold all comments for review, and in some cases, turn them off entirely.

1News is a media outlet based in New Zealand, and could potentially be liable for any comments that defame others or breach New Zealand law. Our content receives thousands of comments each day, and we lack the capacity to moderate that volume without holding comments for review.
