Lake St. Martin Chief Christopher Traverse gathered with Indigenous leaders on behalf of the Beardy family at the Brady Road Landfill on Thursday, where 33-year-old Linda Beardy was found dead on Monday.

Traverse said Beardy was living in Winnipeg since 2011 when she was evacuated due to flooding. He added the entire community of Lake St. Martin is devastated by the news of Beardy's death.

This was the community's first time speaking publicly after the discovery of Beardy's body.

Police have not yet released a cause of death. The entire landfill is currently on an operational pause as the investigation continues.
