Fumio Kishida has been elected prime minister by both houses of Japan's parliament.
He is replacing Yoshihide Suga, who announced his resignation last month.
Prime Minister Kishida has inherited an economy that has been battered by the pandemic, but his first task will be to lead his party through a general election, which local media is reporting is set for October 31 - weeks earlier than expected.
