Japan's new prime minister, Fumio Kishida, said Monday that he would call a parliamentary election for Oct. 31, with plans to dissolve parliament on Oct. 14.

The former foreign minister made the announcements shortly after being formally confirmed to the role by lawmakers. He also vowed to continue the fight against COVID-19, including considering relief payouts.

His decision to call an election came as a surprise, according to reports, as the term of the parliament was due to expire Oct. 21 and an election was originally set for Nov. 28.
