Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said he will quit if given a fine by Durham police for breaking Covid rules. Is this move about principle or is he playing politics? Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog
Keir Starmer has been under pressure after police announced a probe into an event in April 2021, when he had curry and beer at an MP's office during an election campaign visit.
He has insisted rules were not broken and Labour says it has evidence showing it was a work event.
But his career is now in the hands of the police in County Durham.
The other gamble, presumably, is that he would be sacrificing himself in order to the shame the prime minister, who has already been issued with a fine.
But will the gamble pay off?
Newsnight’s political editor Nick Watt reports.
Kirsty Wark is joined by shadow cabinet minister Baroness Smith, former adviser to Tony Blair John McTernan and former adviser to Boris Johnson, Jo Tanner.
