Speaking to journalists in Ottawa on Tuesday, Minister of National Defence Anita Anand made an announcement that $1.4 billion will be invested over the next decade to revitalize the Dwyer Hill Training Centre, home of Joint Task Force 2 (JTF 2), which is an elite special operations force of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
According to Anand, this will be the first major renovation of Dwyer Hill since the CAF acquired the facilities in 1993, and the new facilities will be net-zero ready in preparation for federal targets.
Responding to a question about why Canada is not a part of AUKUS, a trilateral security pact between Australia, the U.K. and the U.S., Anand said that it was because the pact is focused on the acquisition of nuclear submarines, which was not a Canadian priority. She also added that Ottawa is in regular contact with the Five Eyes alliance, made up of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S.
Anand was joined by the Hon. Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board and member of Parliament for Ottawa—Vanier, and Jenna Sudds, member of Parliament for Kanata—Carleton.
