Members of the Canada Armed Forces elite counter-terrorism unit, Joint Task Force 2, have been deployed to Haiti, Global News has learned.

Sources say members are now on the ground at the Canadian Embassy in Port-au-Prince.

The specialized task force had reportedly been preparing to deploy for weeks as the situation in Haiti deteriorated.

Canada's special forces have been deployed to Haiti before, and to other countries like Afghanistan where they’ve helped evacuate embassy staff.
Mercedes Stephenson reports.
