At a Friday funeral for Jordan Neely, a black man who was fatally choked aboard a New York city subway train on May 1, Rev. Al Sharpton said that Neely had been “choked most of his life” by agencies and people that failed him. Sharpton called Neely an example of how the system is failing the homeless and the mentally ill.

Sharpton also called out Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for referring to former marine Daniel Penny, the man accused in Neely’s death, as a “good Samaritan.”

“Good samaritans help people, they do not choke them out,” Sharpton said.

Yusef Salaam, one of five Black men whose conviction in the death of a jogger in New York City’s Central Park was overturned in 2002, also spoke Friday at the funeral for Neely, calling his death a “lynching.”

He said Neely’s death was being “lauded” by the same people who “couldn’t comprehend that five kids of colour walking through Central Park could have been innocent of a crime.”
