One crew member has been confirmed dead after two Japanese military helicopters crashed late on Saturday, Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara said.

Seven other Self Defence Force members remain unaccounted for after the two SH-60K patrol helicopters lost contact east of Torishima, part of Japan's Izu island chain.

The flight recorders of both helicopters have been recovered. They were found in close proximity, raising the possibility that the helicopters collided mid-air, Kihara said.

The helicopters were conducting anti-submarine exercises on Saturday night off the southern coast of central Japan, national broadcaster NHK and Kyodo reported.

Training flights of Japan's Maritime Self Defence Force's SH-60 helicopters have been suspended, Kihara added.
