January 5, 2022: CDC stands by new guidelines on COVID-19 isolation, Record U.S. quits, hiring slowdown may show Omicron's impact on labor supply, U.S. looks to COVID relief funds, Cuomo sex crime case dropped, North Korea suspected of firing a ballistic missile

1. The CDC stands by its guidance for a five-day COVID-19 isolation period adding that rapid antigen tests would not be required. The agency cut its isolation guidance from ten days to five last week. The U.S. reported nearly one million new coronavirus infections on Monday, the highest daily tally of any country in the world.

2. The latest COVID wave may be denting labor supply according to data tracked by Homebase and UKG, which showed employment edging down through December coinciding with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

3. U.S. lawmakers begin early talks about another round of COVID-19 relief for businesses.

4. A NY prosecutor drops a sex crime case against ex-governor Andrew Cuomo saying he could not prove the elements of crime beyond a reasonable doubt.

5. North Korea fired a suspected ballistic missile off its east coast hours before the South Korean president attended a ceremony for a rail line, which he hopes will eventually connect the divided Korean peninsula.
