At least 58 migrants, including children, died when their overcrowded wooden boat smashed into rocky reefs and broke apart off southern Italy before dawn Sunday, according to local Italian authorities. Survivors reportedly indicated that dozens more could be missing as cloth-covered bodies were brought to the sports stadium in the nearest city, Crotone.

“I pray for each of them, for the missing, and for the other migrants who survived. I thank those who are helping them and those who are giving them assistance,” Pope Francis said in his weekly address from St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.

There were various estimates of how many people were on board when the boat collided with the reefs in rough seas. Some wreckage ended up on a stretch along Calabria’s coast.

State TV later quoted survivors as saying the boat had set out five days earlier from Turkey with more than 200 passengers. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said some 200 migrants had been crowded into a 20-meter boat.
