At least 58 migrants have died after their overcrowded wooden boat smashed into rocky reefs off southern Italy. One of the confirmed dead was an infant.
Around 80 people have so far been recovered alive near the coastal city of Crotone. Italy's coast guard said about 120 migrants were on the 20-meter long boat. An Italian official said the vessel left from the western Turkish port of Izmir. Over 14,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea so far this year, up sharply from a year ago.
